The Torch of Empathy: An Event Commemorating Yehoshua Kenaz
The Department of Jewish Studies at San Francisco State University invites you to an event commemorating Hebrew author Yehoshua Kenaz, who died on Oct 12, 2020 due to COVID-19. Kenaz is one of Israel's greatest authors, whose voice contributed to the rich fabric of Israeli culture. Winner of numerous awards, including the Bialik, Agnon, and Alterman awards, Kenaz wrote several acclaimed novels, novellas, and short stories. He was also a prolific translator and the editor of several literary journals and the Haaretz literary supplement. Kenaz's work is a significant voice in Hebrew literature because of his unique focus on marginalized groups in Israeli society.
The event will include a short talk by Israel Institute Teaching Fellow Dr. Vered Weiss titled "The Torch of Empathy: Temporality and Spatial Relegation in The Way to the Cats by Yehoshua Kenaz," examining Kenaz's powerful story of a woman coping with the twilight of her life. Dr. Weiss's talk will be followed by a discussion with SF State Alum Anthony Abuan ('20, English and Jewish Studies).
